Reselling For Tons Of Profits
On Internet, you can make a business, you can buy a business, you can even sell a business. If you are in a hurry to start making money (and who isn’t?), then consider the possibility of acquiring resell rights to a product. Essentially you are buying yourself a business when you do this.
Just how much of the business is yours to develop will depend on the resell rights that you buy. But what is clear in all cases is that you get rapid market entry because the product that you will be reselling already exists. Someone else has done the hard work of figuring out what the market wants and then building the product to fit.
This also works the other way round. If you have developed a product and you are looking for quick cash, resale rights may be the way to go. Just like you, other people see the value in buying a “turn-key” business, meaning a business, which is essentially ready to go. Remember that the promotion of such a business is a separate part and often not part of the negotiation on resell rights.
So what can you buy or sell as resell rights? You have several options with the guiding principle that the more money the reseller can make, the more the original seller should be paid. This flexibility is good because it often allows the seller and the buyer (the reseller) to structure a business deal that suits them both. In the discussion that follows, we ‘re looking at it from the point of view of you being the reseller. But bear in mind that if you have made the product in the first place, then these options are open to you as the original seller of the rights as well, doing a deal with someone else who buys the rights from you.
Let’s mention royalty or commission deals first of all, to distinguish them from other types of resell rights. These deals are very common and form the basis of affiliate agreements. Usually there is no sale of rights here, so if you are the reseller, you don’t pay an entry fee to start reselling. The seller then keeps control of the product by having buyers come through to the seller’s site and taking the money directly before paying out a commission to the reseller.
Before we get to the other moneymaking possibilities, a word on give-away rights. This is where you have the right to give away the product but you cannot charge for it. Why would this be of interest? Possibly as a freebie that makes other products that you sell for money more attractive. Or possibly because the seller has a message they want to get out and is willing to compensate you for every copy that you give away. In itself, this is unlikely to be a big money spinner for you. Think in terms of cents for every copy of the product that you give away.
Basic resell rights are the first level of agreement up from this. Here the reseller can resell the product and keep100% of the profit. The model has changed from the royalty / commission deal because as a reseller you have the product “in-house” and you take the customer’s money directly. There is no longer any reason for the original seller to be involved in these transactions.
Moving up a level, we come to master resell rights. These cost more but there’s a reason. Not only can you sell the product yourself, but you can also sell the resell rights as well. So someone can pay you to acquire the rights to resell the product themselves (they would then keep 100% of the revenue) but the process stops there: that person can resell the product but cannot go further to sell resell rights.
Public Label Rights is the level that corresponds most to a “license to print money”. It’s because these rights allow you to do whatever you want with the product. You can divide it, combine it, put your own name on it, sell it, sell rights, sell master resell rights and so on. Many people use public label rights to rewrite the content and produce original works that they can then sell and resell in the same way.
