Parents Quick Guide To Buying a Platform Bed

Posted by admin

When I was young, I went shopping with my parents for a new bed. Little did I know that experience would stay with me for the rest of my life. Now as an adult and a professional in the furniture industry, I’d like to pass along information to parents shopping for their teen or young adult in hopes of helping them find the right platform bed.

I
grew up with a twin bed when I was young. I think I remember not liking it much
and as I got closer to my teenage years I definitely started developing a
strong dislike for the size of bed I had. It wasn’t until I finally moved out
on my own that I was able to get a queen size bed. So much better in size and
length and a huge upgrade over what I had. Are you unhappy with your current
twin size bed? Here’s some options for you from someone who’s had twenty five
years to think about it.

When I was a kid, I wish I knew everything I do now about beds. My parents, God
love them, were good parents but knew nothing about shopping for beds. Ours was
a college town and they would often rely on college aged salespeople who tried
their best but just weren’t educated. They ended up getting a really thin
mattress that went on a wire framed support system hooked up to a wood day bed
frame. This is probably the most uncomfortable bed I’ve had in my life.

I thank them for making sure that I had a new mattress and bed and as parents
they did help me with what I needed. However, if I had been there as a
salesperson for them, there are a couple of things I would have addressed and
some addition options I would have offered for them and their young son. I now
offer these thoughts and options to you the reader in hopes that you or the
person you’re buying for can enjoy comfortable sleep.

First, how big is the room? If it’s a small room here are some possible options
for a bed. Twin size is ok. Yes I had a rough time with my bed (blame the
mattress) but the size was right for the room. However, there are beds called
extra long twin size beds which are longer than a standard twin bed but the
same small width. This would have been great when I hit my teen years and is
something I’d recommend for smaller rooms and growing kids or teens.

Maybe the room is a little larger and can accommodate a bigger mattress. Great!
Consider a full size mattress. Wider than a twin and still small enough to fit
most places. Got some long walls in the room, make it a full extra long bed.
These are 54? x 80? and basically you’re just shy of a queen size bed. Not all
rooms are this big. If that’s the case consider full size or twin extra long.

Now, onto the mattress discussion. Very important, if the mattress is 6 inches
thick just keep on walking past it. These are horrible and basically work well
for guest rooms but not every day sleeping by a young adult or teen. (Or adult
for that matter.) Try to shoot for a mattress at a minimum of eight inches
thick with good foam and good support. I think ten inches is the optimum height
of mattress as the manufacturer can put more foam and materials into it for
better support. Six inches or less, you’re feeling the foundation of the bed.
Trust me, I know this to be fact.

Well , there it is. My quick guide to buying a new platform bed frame and
mattress.  If my parents had  been able to get this info I think I would
have been in great shape when I was younger for my bed. You’d be surprised
sometimes how a little more information can be of tremendous help. I hope this
article helps you in your search for a new platform bed.
